Moonstone: Soft Light, Quiet Magic

Moonstone: Soft Light, Quiet Magic

There's a reason moonstone has been treasured across cultures for thousands of years. It doesn't demand attention — it earns it. Hold a piece of moonstone in the light and you'll see it: a soft, floating glow that seems to move from within. That phenomenon is called adularescence, and no two stones do it exactly the same way.

At Studio MS Indie Jewelry, moonstone is one of our most beloved materials. Here's what makes it so special.

What Is Adularescence?

Adularescence is the optical effect that gives moonstone its signature glow — a billowy, blue-white light that appears to float just beneath the surface of the stone. It's caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar minerals inside the gem.

Rainbow moonstone, which we work with frequently, shows this effect with a beautiful iridescent shimmer that shifts between white, blue, and sometimes violet depending on the angle.

Delicate by Nature, Intentional by Design

Moonstone sits at a 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it's best suited for earrings and pendants rather than rings or bracelets. We set our moonstone in 14k gold fill and rose gold fill wire — metals that complement the stone's soft, ethereal quality without overpowering it.

Who Moonstone Is For

If you're drawn to pieces that feel romantic, feminine, and quietly luminous, moonstone is your stone. It pairs beautifully with soft neutrals, blush tones, and white — and it photographs with a dreamy quality that makes it a favorite for editorial styling.
